Beautiful

Scrapbook Layout created for Vicki Boutin DT   -  BEAUTIFUL  -

Hi there!

Hope you are all enjoying the last days of Summer (here in the North hemisphere)!  Today, I want to share this new page created using Vicki Boutin's new Field Notes collection.   I received the entire collection (one of the perks of being part of her design team)a few weeks ago, and fell in love with all of it.  The colors, designs, stencils and stamps are gorgeous and so versatile, You are going to love it all!!

To create this page, I decided to use a resist technique using Matte Acrylic gel and Vicki's watercolor set.   I started by prepping one of the foundation papers with a coat of gesso.  Then used a mixture of white art crayon and matte acrylic gel to create the flower impressions on the paper.  You are going to want two sets of the stencils, as they can be used as masks, too!

Once the impressions were completely dried, i used Vicki's watercolors to create a large watercolor background surrounding the flowers.  I made sure that the watercolor covered the groves inside the flower impression.  Before the watercolor completely dried, I used a baby wipe to buff the surface of the stenciled flowers, so that the whiteness of the acrylic gel will appear amongst the watercolor background.

Once the watercolor completely dried, i used the color wheels and one of Vicki's new stamps to add branches/leaves to the background.  I made sure to color block the stamped images to the corresponding color of the flower background.  I set the background aside for a bit so that all the inks completely set before building the layout.

While the background dried, i decided to use all of Vicki's stamp and die sets to create die cuts for my pages.   Also, I went ahead and chose matted and layered the picture of our Goddaughter with papers from the Field Notes 12x12 paper pad.

Once the picture was set on the layout, all the new stamped die cuts were used to create this large clusters at two corners of the picture.  I chose to keep all the flower die cuts white, add color to the stamped leaves, and also to bring some of the colors in the picture in the embellishment that will be used in the page.

By keeping the die cuts white, the added embellishments, from Vicki's new collection , become the perfect complement to the picture being documented.

I kept the rest of the page very simple, and opted to use one of the new thicker phrase stickers as a title, and then added a few more embellishments that will complement the colors in the picture.  Here is the final layout:

I love how this turned out.  The background color and design are perfect, and all the colors the ideal combination to make the picture of this page shine!  Love the contrast in colors and textures featured in this page.  The following video will give you a more detailed look at the creative process of this page:

As always do not hesitate to leave me a comment if you have questions on how this came together.  Remember to check Vicki's new collection, "Field Notes"; I am sure you are going to love it!!!

Til next time!

Summer Junque Journal - Week 1

Hello there! Nathalie with you today.   By now, I hope you all have gathered all the supplies to join us in Vicki’s Summer Camp adventure.   If you haven’t heard of it, or would like to see the prompts, please come join us in the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media Community on Facebook;  you can find all the month’s prompts as well as lots of inspiration from the members.

Now, the line time flies when you are having fun suits this week to a tee!  So I thought I will share a few entries of my Junque Journal and how I created them.

·          Set up:   I decide to break my Junque Journal in weekly sections, which means I will be creating a tab at the beginning of each week.

First I cut a piece of one of the 7x10 papers from the pad, and glued it straight to the cover page.  Here I used some vellum and machine stitching to create a pocket where I can house the list of the challenges for June.  A few pieces of ephemera complete this page.

When creating the cover,  I mixed iridescent and gold glaze to add a few  details to the cover, and used the left over glaze to add the impression of the script to the first tab of the junque journal.  Next, I used warm art crayons to create the watercolor look of the background.

I simply scribbled the crayons on my mat, water them down, then add them to the page by sprinkling droplets on top of the glaze, and finally used a brush to join the drops  together.   I chose to use the roller date stamp to add the dates to the tab of the page, and then a few details from Vicki’s paper collections.

·         Cool:   How about using the entries to work  on some art journaling!?! Well for the Cool prompt, I chose to work with the cool art crayons and ink pad wheel.

For this I started with a well gessoed mixed media insert.  Then scribbled the cool art crayons (in  rainbow order) on my craft mat so that they will fit the dimension of the  page, water each one of them  so that they become watercolors, and then pressed the page onto the cool watercolor rainbow on the mat.  I set this aside to dry completely.  I used a second insert (in the same fashion) to create a second impression onto it.

Onto the next layer, and this time, I chose to add the cool art crayons in a dry form using the circle stencil and the stencil brush.  So once again, I scribbled the art crayon on the mat, used the stencil brush to pick up the color, and then used the brush to create the impression through the stencil just to the border of the page.  I used a bit of the leftover crayon on the brush to create a very faint impression of the stencil to the center of the page.

Next, I chose to add a series of stamped images of the dotted circles (Vicki’s latest stamp release) in their corresponding color using the cool ink pad wheel.  Then used the larger thin sunburst stamp –from the same set-  to add a few images just to the center of the page.

I used a set of dies (Altenew) to create the word “COOL” on a  piece of the second watercolored paper.  Then used some foam adhesive to add the detail  to the page.  LOVE how this turned out!

·         Glaze:  Today’s prompt is all about “Glaze”, so I chose to play with a few techniques to create this  super shimmery page.

This time,  I chose to use a brayer to add a thin layer of iridescent glaze to a mixed media insert instead of gesso.  This means, I primed my page with iridescent glaze instead of gesso.

By adding iridescent glaze as a base coat, I created this super shimmery background for my page. Though it does react with water, I wanted a shimmery base to the paper, and knew that even if I added water next, all I would create would be a shimmery watercolor look on the page.

Next I pulled the purple and fuchsia art crayons, scribbled them down on the craft mat, used some water to dilute them, and then used a brayer to add the colors onto the dried glazed insert.   Next I added a few splatters of the art crayons, and set it aside to dry completely.  Though I added water to the page, the glaze  hardly moved in the background, and can easily be seen as the base on the watercolor splatters on the page.

Once the layer was dried, I created the flower impression on the page by adding rose gold glaze to the page using the flower stencil, and the stencil brush.

I wanted to add a bit of extra texture, and create a soft detail on the background, so I pulled a stencil from my stash (Echo Park) and used a mixture of gold and iridescent glaze to create a soft trail of dots on the page.

Here I added a selfie taken a few days ago. I added a few pieces of ephemera that match the colors of the watercolor, and then used the rose gold glaze to add a few extra shimmer to some butterflies from the watercolor sticker set.
Now I think that is it for this week!  It was so much fun to create all these pages, and a great format to practice new techniques. The following video will showcase how all these were created:

That is all for me!  Remember to come join us in the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media Community Facebook page to see all the details of the Summer challenge, and remember to share your creations with us all.

Hey Love

Scrapbook Layout created for Vicki Boutin DT  - HEY LOVE -

Hello Everyone!
Nathalie with you  to bring you a bit of inspiration using some of Vicki’s beautiful products.   Everything is blooming around my place, so I wanted to add lots  of those white blossoms I see on the trees to a layout, so I decided to experiment with some watercolor, gesso and art crayons.

It all started with a gessoed foundation paper;   my idea was to have a column of watercolor as an anchor for this page, so I used some painter’s tape to block a vertical section of my page.

I wanted to use warm tones for this page, so I pulled yellows and pinks to create the watercolor column.  This process was simple, I just used the watercolor brushes to drop watercolor and water splatters to the marked space, and then used one of the round brushes to fuse them together.

Unfortunately, the watercolor did run under the masked line (it is all based on the application of the gesso), leaving a not so straight edge.  Before setting it all to dry, a bit of gold glaze was diluted with  water and then  sprinkled  inside the watercolor column.

Next came adding all the flowers in this page,  for that  gesso was dragged through the flower stencil .  The idea was to create an “s” shape on top of the watercolor column.

To hide a bit of the not-so-crisp lines of the watercolor, I also added some of the gesso flowers to a few sections outside of the column.   Now it was time to leave the gesso to set up.

To make the flowers on the white background pop, I pulled art crayons and the stencil brush to add color to these sections.  I played  with the same colors used in the watercolor column.     Once all the colors were applied, a baby wipe was used to buff the gesso flowers (this will take away some of the art crayons from the gesso),  so that they pop from the color.

Now it was all about embellishing.   I added clusters to different sections of the page, making sure that there was color in each cluster so that it contrast with the whiteness of the background.

A few paper layers from both paper pads bring color to the black and white picture, and then flower clusters from the ephemera, rub on (the images were rubbed on vellum,  and then fussy cut).   The little enamel dots added just help bring all the colors together.

I took advantage of the scripted ephemera words to form the title of this page, and added a few butterflies (these are watercolor stickers that have been color with diluted gold glaze) so that they create movement on the page.

The contrast in texture and color of the background is what makes this page pop.   The process is simple, but focuses on a few techniques. The following video will show you how this page came together:

I really hope this inspires you to check Vicki’s amazing Mixed Media products and all her All The Good Things collection.
As always let me know if you have questions on how this came together.

Hello Love

Scrapbook Layout created for Vicki Boutin DT  - HELLO LOVE -

Hi there!  Nathalie with you today to bring you a bit of inspiration using the colors in Vicki’s monthly challenge (you can find all the details in the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media community, come join us!!!) with a fun Just Nick Studio cut file.

For this page, I started with the cut file as inspiration (I saw this file in one of Vicki’s Facebook Live episodes, and quickly downloaded it to my library!); so I played with the brushstrokes until they aligned like in the layout, and sent it to cut in the Silhouette Cameo from one of the foundation papers.

While the design was being cut, I mixed Acrylic Matter Gel with a bit of white Art Crayon.  I wanted the sheen of the gel to show on the background, that is why I mixed some crayon in it.  Then proceeded to pass the gel through the script stencil onto a gessoed foundation paper.

Since gel medium takes a bit of time to dry, I started to add color to the cut outs.  For this, I thinned out the four colors - Juicy Pear, Sugared Strawberry, Blue Hawaiian, and Coral Macaroon- of acrylic paint with some water, and used a brayer to color the cut outs as if they were made with a brush.

These dried pretty quickly, so a little after; I decided to pull some art crayons and the stencil brush to add a bit of interest to the paint strokes.  Many of Vicki’s stencils were used, and a few of the crayons were mixed to create the colors of the paint.

Also the stencil brush was used to add more definition to the edges of the cut outs.  Think of it as using the ink blender on the edge of the papers.

Now that the gel medium had dried, it was time to complete the background.  For this I simply used the black color from the watercolor set with lots of water.  Then used the widest paint brush to create watercolor paint strokes on top of the dried gel medium.

To finish the background, I buffed the script impression with a baby wipe, and left it aside to dry for a bit.

Setting up this page took no time, since I knew that the paint strokes with words were forming the title, and then they will be stacked on the page.

The cut outs were then glued to the page using some foam adhesive to add lift to some of the strokes, and create dimension along the page.  A few pieces of ephemera were added in between some of the strokes to add sentiment to the page.

The picture was then glued to the page using foam squares.  Clusters were then created at the corners of the page, and then a bit of rose gold glaze was diluted so that it can be added as droplets around the page.

To finish the page, I pulled the Finishing embellishments and add them to the page, just to bring more of the colors of the page together.

Love how this page turned out!  The colors just pop with the dark watercolor background and the small script that shows brings more interest to the page.  The following video will show you how this page came together:

I hope this inspires you to take some time to be creative.  If you are not a member of the Vicki Boutin Mixed Media community on Facebook , then come join us!  We are always around, and you can find me there if you have questions on how this came together!
